Community college board chairman launches campaign for Lane County Board: Lane Community College Board Chairman Tony McCown on Saturday launched his campaign for the north Eugene seat on the county Board of Commissioners. “For the past number of years, I’ve seen the conservative majority on the commission make a series of decisions that just don’t seem in tune with the values of the district,” McCown said. McCown, who will run against incumbent Commissioner Pat Farr, kicked off his campaign with a mid-­afternoon event at Cozmic in downtown Eugene.

Anti-Islan billboard: A ‘sign’ of cowardice 

Editor: A recent billboard with a message of hate is a form of bullying. The anonymity of the person exercising his freedom of speech can be seen as cowardice. What is known about people who choose these behaviors is there that there is a deep-seated emotional hurt.

The community response through the interfaith service Wednesday evening at the Cathedral Basilica was a powerful event to have witnessed. The true message of all religions is one of love, regardless of how a few outliers might wish to taint that unifying doctrine. I sincerely hope that the person responsible for the billboard attended the service — anonymously — so that he could feel the compassion which is representative of our community of St. Augustine. Perhaps in this way he would know that whatever his personal struggles, there is an entire community willing to have a conversation about the loving connection expected within all expressions of faith.
