University of Oregon president initiates new students into meaning of the ‘O’ at convocation: When he first came to the University of Oregon, President Michael Schill said that one of the first things he learned was how to “throw the O,” holding his hands up above his head in the ubiquitous oval emblazoned all over the Matthew Knight Arena. As he addressed several thousand students in the arena Sunday afternoon with their hands raised to join him, Schill explained that “throwing your O” is more than a gesture at a football game: It’s the way the students will leave their mark wherever they go.
