Voter fraud is rare

Voter fraud is rare: It’s hard to know what Secretary of State Dennis Richardson was thinking when he held a press conference Friday afternoon, headlined “Voter Fraud Cases Referred for Criminal Prosecution.” This sky-is-falling headline on the Secretary of State web site, however, grossly misrepresented the results of a computer review of voting records. In reality, the review found questions regarding only 54 ballots — .002 percent of votes cast, or one out of every 38,000 — a statistically insignificant number. And those are just questions; not one shred of proof has been offered to show that any deliberate voting fraud actually occurred.
