$57,500 in public funds spent on 20x21EUG artwork: In the past two years, the city of Eugene has commissioned artists — none from Lane County — to paint large, colorful murals around the city center. Eugene resident Cathy Beyer had questions about the murals, including, “Who is paying for the foreign artists … and why aren’t more of our local talented artists being used this way?” Here are answers — and background information — from city spokeswoman Sarah-Kate Sharkey and Isaac Marquez, the city’s cultural services director. The bottom line: The city has paid for the murals mainly with tax, fee and permit revenues.
