CAIR# Oregon Condemns State House Republican Candidate's Anti-Muslim, Anti-Semitic Comments!

#CAIR-#Oregon Condemns State House Republican Candidate’s Anti-Muslim, Anti-Semitic Comments
(PORTLAND, OREGON, 4/11/2018) – The Oregon chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Oregon), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today strongly condemned anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic comments made by a Eugene-area House Republican Candidate Joshua Powell, a candidate for Oregon House District 11.
Powell posted Islamophobic and anti-Semitic comments on his Facebook page, including a post that said he “Saw more Muslims in Eugene… ISIS right under our noses.” He claims he’s not racist but is interested in “preserv[ing] the Western cultural heritage.”
When questioned in an interview by the Register Guard newspaper, Powell said that he’s concerned about Muslim and illegal immigration to Oregon. He said, “We’ve never had Muslims here in Oregon, ever, until now.”
On Facebook, Powell wrote: “New York Times called the Bundy ranch people trying to spin the narrative ... (expletive) Jews!,” “A new (expletive) low by the Jew York Times.”

“Political and religious leaders in our state must take a stand against this candidate’s hatred and bigotry,” said Zakir Khan, CAIR-Oregon spokesperson. “The Muslim community in Eugene was targeted by hate crimes in recent years. Based on his public comments on social media, clearly Mr. Powell rejects the religious inclusion and diversity that make our nation great.”
CAIR launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
