Editorial — Shame all around: County legislators fail to censure colleague for offensive action

"This imagery dehumanizes Muslims. It’s blatant bigotry, plain and simple. Her behavior is expressing such odious ideas is reprehensible, and her fellow legislators should have no qualms about saying so.

One of our nation’s greatest gifts to the rest of the world is our commitment to religious and cultural diversity, something Ms. Curran obviously does not value. Not surprisingly, she has since deactivated both her Facebook and Twitter accounts.

St. Lawrence County legislators also turned their backs on our country’s founding principles by refusing to condemn Ms. Curran’s action. If board members felt this was appropriate for Mr. LaPierre, why should Ms. Curran get a pass? We need to hold public officials to the highest ethical standards, but legislators lack the backbone to do what’s right."
