Rep. Rashida Tlaib sponsors bill cracking down on use of facial recognition technology

"Yesterday Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib introduced legislation that would prohibit the use of facial and biometric recognition technology in public housing nationwide.
Excessive surveillance of targeted communities, including Arab Americans and American Muslims, is one example of securitization resulting in discriminatory practices and inordinate threats to our constitutional rights.
Our communities can be particularly threatened by
unregulated surveillance technologies. #FacialRecognition represents a clear emerging threat we don't yet understand. That's why we joined 60+ groups in calling 4 fed. moratorium earlier this summer.
There shouldn't be fed. use or provision of assistance for the deployment of #FacialRecognition for "immigration & law enforcement purposes until there can be a full debate about what, if any, uses should be permitted."
Alongside leading national civil rights advocates & community-based orgs, AAI argues we should not move forward with the deployment of #FacialRecognition technology, especially until and unless our rights can be fully safeguarded."
