A former Minnesota sheriff is suing a Texas-based anti-Muslim group and its leader, alleging that the man assaulted him after he questioned the group's claims.

John Guandolo is set to appear in federal court Monday for a trial in the civil case accusing him of assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

A former FBI agent, Guandolo is a prominent anti-Muslim activist and the leader of Understanding the Threat, which describes itself as an anti-terrorism education group. The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the organization as a hate group.
