CAIR Supports UNC-Chapel Hill Students in ‘Silent Sam’ Confederate Statue Case
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/15/20) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) students and faculty seeking to intervene in a settlement between the UNC System and a pro-Confederate group.
The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law filed an appeal on behalf of five students and a faculty member who want to intervene in the settlement over the Confederate statue on UNC’s campus known as “Silent Sam.”

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ayan Ajeen said:
“As a recent graduate from UNC, I saw the negative effect this Confederate monument and the decisions regarding it had on the student body. We support those taking this issue to court and hope harmony will soon replace the hostility caused by these statues on college campuses.”
Earlier today, CAIR said a decision by a Virginia school board to allow the Confederate flag on clothing worn to school will create a “hostile learning environment” for minority students.
