'This is an opportunity': Nonprofit steps up to turn Wapato Jail into housing for homeless
"Hello!
I came across this article with a bit of research about the infamous Wapato Jail. I feel conflicted about this whole thing and how media is eating up.
$58 million of dollars were spent and this place wasn’t used for years with battle of saving Wapato or demolish, it is absolutely expensive waste. Just that alone is unacceptable.
Jordan Schnitzer is a rich white able-bodied straight male who is fighting to save the Wapato jail as if it is a gold mine. After I saw his press conference with his talking points, it was cringe worthy. He said he may provide transportation to downtown. He did not say in details how will this work, when is it available, and the cost. This is a red flag right there. I’m concerned because it is a very isolated place where they keep people in there just like prison. There are no stores, bars, entertainment, hospitals, nothing with this very expensive price tag. Isolation is unacceptable.
What bothers me is that the city still continue to band-aid and not house people. It wasn’t mentioned how long can people stay there? Who pays for food, medical, utilities and so forth? Jordan said he will provide services, just exactly what they will be? Who will pay for people who works there? Jordan didn’t provide much to support his plan why this will be a success. This concerns me to no end.
Wapato jail is just one of other temporary solution to permanent problem.
Thoughts?"
