CAIR Condemns Trump’s Use of Racist Dog Whistle ‘Chinese Virus’

(WASHINGTON, DC., 3/17/20) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned President Trump’s use of the racist dog whistle “Chinese virus” in recent tweets about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Trump used the term in tweets last night and this morning.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“By using this racist dog whistle, President Trump is endangering the lives of Asian-Americans, who have experienced a spike in discrimination and hate crimes during the COVID-19 outbreak. We are all in this together. It's time for unity of humankind and compassion, not bigotry and racism."

CAIR’s New York chapter recently condemned a series of hate attacks on Asian-Americans in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
