When fellow Supervisor Eddie Valero asked for more information during a discussion on COVID-19, Vander Poel said, "Supervisor Valero wants another bite of the tortilla."
In a statement, CAIR-CC Outreach Director Sukaina Hussain said:
“We condemn this racist comment made by Supervisor Vander Poel. It is disturbing that the chairman of the Board of Supervisors in a Latino-majority county would target his Latino colleague, Supervisor Valero, with such a derogatory and bigoted remark. He must be held accountable. "
Elkarra urged community members to report any bias incidents to law enforcement and to CAIR-SV/CC’s Civil Rights Department at 916-441-6269 or by filing a report online.
